Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on approach to healthcare, recognising the important link between the structures of your body & the way it functions.

An osteopath uses anatomical and physiological knowledge, along with skilled clinical evaluation to assess and diagnose the source of pain. They look at the whole body for the causes of injury, as well as barriers to recovery.

Osteopaths use a wide range of techniques to improve the relationship between joints, muscles, nerves and circulation to restore full function to the body.

Session time typically varies from 30mins – 60mins

Session Cost

Initial Consultation and treatment session      €85

Follow up sessions (30  – 45 mins)    €70

60min Session €85

What techniques are used in Osteopathy?

There Are a multitude Of Osteopathic Treatment Techniques. Having such a wide range of treatment techniques means that osteopaths can treat a problem in many different ways.

Soft Tissue Techniques

Type of massage that uses light or firm, direct pressure to relax hypertonic (tight) muscles and stretch tight fascial structures.

Muscle Energy Technique

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a manual therapy that uses the muscle contractions of the patient to relax and lengthen tight muscles and improve joint range of motion.

Articulation Techniques

Passive mobilisation of the spine or a joint by the practitioner to improve joint movement.

HVLA (high velocity, low amplitude thrusts)

High velocity, low amplitude (HVLA) is a technique where you may hear a ‘pop’ or ‘click’ of a joint. HVLA is a great technique, when warranted, to improve joint motion.

Counterstrain

Imagine your tight muscle is like an elastic band on stretch. Counterstrain takes the muscle of stretch so it can reset to its normal resting tone and length. A gentle way to release muscles and joints.

Cranial – Sacral Osteopathy

Cranial-sacral osteopathy is a gentle therapy that aims to balance and strengthen the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) which surrounds and nourishes the brain and spinal cord.

During a cranial-sacral treatment your osteopath uses gentle touch that encourages your tissues to relax and unwind. During, or following treatment, you may experience a sense of deep relaxation, tingling, fluid flow or relief from your pain; these effects are very subtle.

Visceral Osteopathy

Visceral Osteopathy is an expansion of the general principles of osteopathy which includes a special understanding of the organs, blood vessels and nerves of the body (the viscera). Visceral Osteopathy relieves imbalances and restrictions in the interconnections between the motions of all the organs and structures of the body.

What can Osteopathy treat?

Osteopaths can treat people of all ages from newborn babies to senior citizens.

Patients seek treatment for a wide variety of conditions, including back pain, repetitive strain injury, changes to posture in pregnancy, postural problems caused by driving or work strain, the pain of arthritis and sports injuries. Osteopathic medicine is also very effective in treating the problems that develop during pregnancy and early childhood. Osteopathic treatment can be used in conjunction with your normal medication and can be adapted to treat any age or condition. Patients do not need a referral from their G.P.
